Using Posterous
HOW WE PREFER TO USE POSTEROUS
The purpose of Posterous and how we use it is to be able to update many many social sites and blogs at once with the Auto-Post feature of this micro-blogging service. It’s very easy to set up and to interact with. Once it’s set up, you just go in and type things, add pictures, etc. and it will update your Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Blogs and many other social sites… all at once!
It will also help to drive in tons of backlinks with their anchor text.
Now, you know about penalties for duplicate content, right? Okay, Google will choose which of these it considers to be the most authoritative site. The sites will still be indexed. The backlinks will still be counted.
Once this is set up, you can run your business from your smart phone. How cool is that?
SETTING UP POSTEROUS?
All you need to do is send an email to post@posterous.com
You can send anything in your message… just send it and magically, you will get an email back saying “Let’s Get Started!”
From there, just click through to set up a password for your site.
Choose a name and a password. Then sign up.
Fill out your profile. Add a photo.
Here’s one of the most powerful tricks to this method:
In the html box, just add some code like this, to give you your backlink:
This is my XXXXX site
<a href=”http://yourdomain.com”>Your Anchor Link Text Goes Here</a>
You will need to confirm the email address - on top you’ll need to confirm the one email.
You can go through and set up mobiles, notifications, etc.
Now you can click the link up on top “My Posterous” to have a look at it.
Okay, now to set up your autopost features, up on top, click “Manage”.
Click Autopost in sidebar
Click “Make Changes” on the right
Click “Add a Service”
Click on your service, say WordPress
Go in and type in your web address… http://yourdomain.com, add your password and you’re ready to roll.
So all you need to do now is send an email to post@posterous.com, enter your email and click “send”
You will now find your post on your blog, twitter, etc. And the link to your site will be scattered all over the place, like Johnny’s Apple Seeds. Now That’s Dissemination!
Easy, huh?
ADDING SITES TO POSTEROUS
There are tons of services you can add. Refer back to the “Add a Service” section above.
If you want to set up a different Twitter account for your niche, go ahead. You can have your website link there. Another backlink.
You can set up a Facebook page for your site as well for your niche. You can also add your backlinks here. NOTE: At the time of this writing there is a known issue with Facebook pages and you may not be able to get a FB Page to sync with Posterous. It may or may not work for you, but you should be able to do it with a FB profile.
You can use LinkedIn as well. Set up a profile with links back to your blog and site. This is another link.
Just add these services to your Posterous account and add a service. As you continue to build out your profiles on the various sites and services, always add it to your Posterous account.
Look at all these choices:

The most highly recommended services to use are below. You can click any of the links to get instructions on setting them up:
Wordpress.com
Blogger
identi.ca
LiveJournal
Xanga
These services will help you to generate tons of backlinks in your network every time you update your Posterous account.
Now when you send an email to post@posterous.com it will update all your services at once!
This is now your publishing network!
PUTTING EVERYTHING TOGETHER WITH POSTEROUS
Now that you have your network set up, you should have identi.ca, twitter, linkdin, tumblr, your blog, wordpress.com, facebook, etc.
And you thought that was great… just wait…
If you are using Google Reader for RSS subscriptions, you can grab something that you like from a feed, you can email it to your post@posterous.com
You can grab a quote from a feed post, insert it into an email, modify the quote or comment on it. Put the quote in quotes. You can grab a YouTube video URL, paste it in, add a link to the actual blog post from the originator’s blog. You could say, “read more” and their link.
Add the subject to your email, which will become the title of your post.
You can then add a link to your site in it, and then make a little comment on it, such as “just found this post about XXXXX, I like what they say about YYYYY”.
Now you have:
- the quote
- link to their blog
- link to your site
- a video
- maybe a picture (grab one from flickr mayb
e) - title
- your comment
Now send your email and voila! This will put your email up on all your services and you have updated your sites, and driven in more backlinks to your network.
Of course, you can also do this within posterous as well.
These days, once you’re set up, you can post anything via email with your Posterous. You can do this from your smartphone, iphone, ipad, etc. Who needs a computer?!?
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I POST?
The Blog gets posted once a week with your theme keyword and category keywords (tags, etc.) – these should be spread out.
The Posterous network should be used wh
enever the mood takes you there. You’re at a ballgame and take a picture on your phone of a great play… Posterous it. Your at a big business seminar and want to send a shout out to your fans, done. A video, a picture, wherever, whenever.
When your anchor text and theme keyword is already built in on your Posterous account, you will be spreading out your links and keywords at all times.
This is how Don does it.
